I bought a portable MiniDisc recorder a few years ago so that I could record sound effects for flash cartoons I was making. I found that the best microphone for recording close and distant sounds together was a condenser mic. I didn't like that I had to hold the mic and the MiniDisc. I also didn't like that everytime I put the thing in my pocket I had to untangle the wires.

I bought 2 things at Radio Shack: A mono 1/8th inch jack and a condenser mic element. Hopefully your radio shack actually stocks its shelves, and has staff that know something other than cell phone plans.
These little helping hands are really handy, er helpful, er convenient. Just solder the red wire to the center lead, and the black to the outer one.
You may want to trim some of the wire off the end of the mic leads. Also, make sure to trim them so the element stands up straight inside the end of the jacket.
The wires should be all you need to secure the mic element inside the end of the connecter

Altogether, I think I spent less than 5 dollars on the parts. It makes a pretty good little portable mic for the MD. It is a little sensitive to wind noise, so maybe I will make a windscreen for it soon.
