I got the idea for this from Afrotechmods. He made his a little fancier with the LED to show that the power was on, but I didn't feel that that was necessary. I decided to mount mine on a 2 x 4 block, and add a coil for holding a soldering iron. I hate putting the soldering iron on a stand that moves easily across the table. Also, the 2 x 4 makes the control stand up nicely.

I started out with a bunch of stuff I had lying around the house: wire nuts, scraps of wood, some romex cable, and an old dimmer switch. All I needed to buy was an outlet, a gang box, a length of extension cord, and a replacement end for an extension cord.
First, knock out the circle in the back and put the cable clamp in it.
Strip off the insulation on one end of the extension cord. Connect the green wire (ground) to the round prong, Connect the White wire to the silver-ish prong, and connect the black wire to the gold-ish prong. Now feed the jacket over the connections and screw it together.
Feed the wires through, separate them and strip off the insulation. One side of the outlet should be gold-ish and the other should be silver-ish. Connect the white wire from the extension cord to the silver terminal. Connect the ground from the extension cord to the green screw on the corner of the outlet.
Connect the red wire from the dimmer switch to the gold side, and twist the 2 black wires (dimmer and extension cord) together with a wire nut. Wrap the connections with electrical tape and screw everything down into the gang box.
Straighten out a wire coat hanger and measure about 7 inches from the end. Clamp it at a slight angle to a broomstick and start winding it around it. If the coils are uneven, just twist the wire tighter and squish it down. The coils will tighten up.
Bend the wires downward in the same direction, so the coil will sit up on an angle. Bend the coil outwards a couple times to make feet that are easy to attach to the board.

I used cable staples to attach the coil. These are like a finishing nail that's bent into a U. They come loose in a box and you hammer them down. I put a couple extra on the corners to make sure the hanger wouldn't slide around under the staples.
