Audrey Overview

| I was playing a cd while doing the dishes one day and I thought about finding something that could play my MP3's over my network. I needed something that would be small enough to mount on the wall, and still be able to play audio. I remembered a friend of mine getting an Audrey a few years ago and thinking it was cool. | ||||||

3Com originally made these as internet appliances. You could get on the internet, send email, and manage your email addresses and phone numbers. You could sync it with 2 Palms, and have 2 separate profiles. This was about all you could do. |

| 3Com discontinued the Audrey, and sold off all of their stock through retailers like TigerDirect. The Audrey slowly lost more functionality when unauthenticated mail servers slowly went away. Fewer and fewer dialup ISP's were available for the Audrey and if I had to guess, the newer Palms probably can't sync with them anymore. | ||||||

However, just from a hardware standpoint, this is an amazing
machine. It has a decent sized, backlit touchscreen, 2 speakers, microphone,
wireless IR keyboard, 1/8" stereo out jack, Phone and line telephone
jacks, a Compact Flash slot, and 2 usb ports.

| I started looking up information about these internet appliances and found that there was a large community centered around modifying them. Here are some of the useful sites I found about Audreys: |

| The USB jacks on the Audrey are only useful for one thing: a USB 10baseT network card. I have read that there are a few models that will work, but the one that 3Com originally intended is the 3C19250. |

| If you remove the little door on the right hand side of the Audrey, you will find the CompactFlash card slot. On the next page I will start to explain the process I used to flash my Audrey. |
